UV Disinfection Information
NOTE: It is recommended that ALL UV DISINFECTION UNITS be preceeded by a filtration system to reduce shadowing.

    UV Disinfection is a relatively new technology. Therefore, there are some questions people have about the technology that need to be answered before making an informed decision about either a purchase or stocking the product. Here are the answer to some most important questions concerning the technology.

What is shadowing?
    Shadowing is a term used for when bacteria hides behind the particles in the water. When water flows through the UV disinfection equipment, the light scrambles the DNA of the bacteria, making it incapable of reproducing or killing it. If there are particles in the water, some bacteria can hide behind them in the shadow of the light, getting through the equipment unharmed. Turbidity and Total Dissolved Solids play a high role in shadowing occurances.

What does it mean if I have a "biofilm?"
    A biofilm is a thin layer on the inside of a piping system comprised of aerobic and anaerobic micro organisms that can, if they are not flushed out, continue to contaminate water even after the UV system is installed.

What does dark light reactivation mean for my water?
    Certain organisms with damaged DNA from the UV light can repair the damage done with specific enzymes once out of the light. The process is an unusual occurance, but can still happen and possibly make water unsafe. Proper tests will determine if there is a problem and a draw point system or a countertop model will keep this from causing problems. Photoreactivation is similar, with organisms repairing once presented to a light source other than the UV lamp.

Will an incorrect flow rate upset the balance of the system?
    The answer is yes. Flow rate will absolutely affect how your water is treated. Units have a maximum flow rating because that is the fastest the water can flow through the unit while still being treated properly. If the flow is too fast, the water won't have time to scramble the DNA of the organisms within the water. Flow restrictors and other similar tools are available to make sure your unit is cleaning your water as efficiently as possible.
